Ms. Julie Bishop, United Nations Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, visited the PHALS Soap Production Centre at Camp 20 in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, today to observe a livelihood initiative supporting Rohingya refugees and host communities.
The delegation included Ms. Carol Flore-Smereczniak, UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh; Ms. Juliette Murekeyisoni, Acting Representative of UNHCR in Bangladesh; Mr. Duncan Wilson, Political Affairs Officer; and Ms. Pyae Thet Chael, Associate Public Information Officer, both from the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar.
During the visit, the delegation observed the soap manufacturing process and learned about the production cycle, operational activities, and livelihood opportunities created through the initiative. PHALS Executive Director Abu Murshed Chowdhury and the production centre’s chemist briefed the visitors on the soap production process and the centre’s activities.
The initiative is part of an IOM-supported livelihoods programme funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and implemented in partnership with PHALS. It aims to promote self-reliance, dignity, hygiene, and social cohesion among Rohingya refugees and members of host communities.
The soap production centre demonstrates how locally established production facilities can contribute to meeting essential humanitarian supply needs while creating employment opportunities, developing practical skills, and strengthening economic resilience.
The initiative also highlights the importance of sustainable livelihood programmes in supporting refugee communities and fostering positive engagement between Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Cox’s Bazar.
